Modern Primitive Bali

Modern Primitive Bali grew from Tom Shadle’s interest in modern design and traditional Balinese materials such as stone and wood. Influenced by the Japanese aesthetics of shibui and iki, the studio approaches design through simplicity, restraint, and material essence. Founded in 2003 with Puji Astuti, the practice has expanded across bespoke furniture, sculpture, primitive art, design consultation, and curated Art Homes that combine modern architecture with handcrafted materials, custom furnishings, and collected artworks.
